Shortlisted: The StartUp Legal is a finalist at the Legal Innovation & Impact Awards 2026

The StartUp Legal has been named a finalist in the SMMEs & Legal Tech Startups category at the inaugural Legal Innovation & Impact Awards 2026.

We were nominated in May. This month, an independent panel of judges placed us on the finalist shortlist, alongside a strong group of founders and innovators from across Africa. Winners are announced at the Awards Gala Dinner on 25 June in Johannesburg.

We are proud of it. But the part worth writing about is not the shortlist. It is what the shortlist is for.

What the award recognises

The Legal Innovation & Impact Awards were created to recognise the people changing how law actually works on the continent, judged on innovation, impact, and contribution to the broader legal ecosystem. Our category sits where small business meets legal technology. That is the exact space we set out to serve.

Why we built The StartUp Legal

Most founders only meet a lawyer once something has already gone wrong. The deal has soured, the contract has a hole in it, and the supplier has stopped paying. By then, the advice is expensive, and the options are narrow.

We built The StartUp Legal to flip that order. Good legal cover should be something you put in place early, like infrastructure, not something you scramble for in a crisis. That means plain language instead of jargon, attorney-drafted templates you can buy and use the same day, and senior counsel for the moments that genuinely need it.

Law as a seatbelt, not a handbrake. That idea is the whole business.

What it means for the founders we work with

This recognition is not really ours. It belongs to the clients who trusted us with the work that got us here. Since its launch in 2024, that work has meant flagging risky deal terms before contracts were signed, recovering close to R1 million in overdue payments, and guiding South African SMEs through trademark filings that lock in real brand value.

None of that is glamorous. It is the everyday work of keeping a business protected so the founder can get on with building. Being shortlisted tells us the approach is landing, and that there is appetite for legal support that treats founders as capable people who need clarity, not hand-holding.

What is next
